From 8 a.m. on Thursday 31st May until 8 a.m. on Saturday 2nd June ingenious members of the Littlemoor Youth Centre Top Club, part of the Dorset Youth and Community Service, took part in ‘The Great 48 (Hour) Challenge,’ fully embracing the Save a Baby Month campaign’s 48 theme.
On the 48th minute of every hour those taking part had to complete a challenge, thereby completing a total of 48 challenges- the 48th of course being to stay awake for the whole 48 hour period!
Those taking part described themselves as “nine young people, two youth workers and a pocket full of ideas.” Danielle, Jade, Lolz, Kat, Anthony, Gary, Lauren, Stacie, Sam and Arron devised and completed a massive variety of tasks throughout the challenge from building 48 sandcastles on Weymouth beach and constructing a tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti in 4 minutes and 48 seconds to a 48 minute silence.
Other 48-themed activities included an aerobics session, dancing, window cleaning, a game of twister, eating cream crackers and a penalty shoot out on a bouncy castle. The group even washed an Audi A4, a police van and a minibus in 4 minutes and 48 seconds and was also sponsored by Weymouth and Portland Housing Association to litter pick 48 cans and bottles.
Gary Evans, a youth worker at the youth and community centre in Louviers road, Weymouth, was approached by youth club members who had heard about the Save a Baby Month Campaign and wanted to help. He explains:
“Our aim was to begin one activity at 48 minutes past every hour for 48 hours- so completing 48 challenges in 48 hours. We built 48 sandcastles on Weymouth beach and wrote ‘save a baby’s life’ in the sand in 4 minutes and 48 seconds. We aimed to help 10 babies. At £48 each that’s £480, and we’re expecting to beat that figure…It’s been tiring, but rewarding.”
After completing 48 runs on inflatable rings down the dry ski slope at Warmwell, buying all meals for the group with a budget of £4.80 and finally, patting each other on the back 48 times, the group raised a massive £548.42, well in excess of their target.
FSID would like to say a massive thank you to all the members and youth workers at Littlemoor Youth Centre Top Club who took part in ‘The Great 48 Hour Challenge’ for all their hard work, support and creative fundraising ideas.
