A previous study by Dr Roger Webb, University of Manchester, identified high risk groups, including infants of mothers with alcohol/drug-related disorders and those with two parents admitted for any psychiatric treatment. In general, there was a twofold higher risk with any maternal and with any paternal admission. Maternal schizophrenia conferred a lower risk than hs been previously indicated.
This new study will adjust for confounding factors such as smoking or socioeconomic status. To inform preventive strategies it is important to establish whether elevated risk is linked directly with parental disorder, or if it is largely explained by other factors.
